Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. The aunt she had was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself via the medium of art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her life, but would spend every summer with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. The duties she was required to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as an intern at a small studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
